Escaping Comfort Zones: My Unexpected Journey into Acting

A few months ago, I joined a 6-month film program recommended by a former colleague of mine. I wasn’t a complete stranger to the world of film, having co-written one before. Out of curiosity and passion, I enrolled as a writer among other film enthusiasts of diverse skills (details to follow once I’m actually a graduate 😅).

To my surprise, out of the 18 scripts submitted for the capstone film project, mine was among the top three selected by a distinguished panel of experts. This meant that three dedicated teams, each crafted from a mix of the program’s talents, would be formed to breathe life into these scripts.

Me practicing my “bad-guy” smirk.

But here’s where the plot thickened: We hit a roadblock when trying to cast the main antagonist – a cunning character that sees the protagonist, a young timid woman, as simply a means to his ends. Despite our best efforts, the perfect fit eluded us. That’s when our director suggested I step into the role. (hmmm… I wonder why🤔

Now, let’s set the record straight: I’m no Leonardo DiCaprio. My acting claim to fame? Playing Jafar in a primary school rendition of Disney’s Aladdin (and yes, another antagonist – sensing a pattern?) My height seemed to offer the imposing presence the script required, however, (183cm… that’s above average you know). It was a daunting proposition, given that I’ve always felt more comfortable behind the scenes. But, challenges are often opportunities in disguise.

Determined not to let my team down, I dived into an acting masterclass from our program, trying to get into the skin of the character. The experience, guided by our skilled directors and the talented protagonist (who was herself a professional actor), was an eye-opener. Notably, a heated argument scene pushed me beyond what I thought I was capable of. To my astonishment, our editor later complimented me on that very performance. Was he just being polite? Maybe, but I won’t turn down a compliment!

Reflecting on this journey, I’m reminded of a saying that holds true: “Life begins at the end of your comfort zone.” While I’m not setting my sights on Hollywood just yet, this experience has given me a renewed sense of confidence. Taking a chance, even when riddled with self-doubt, can lead to unexpected rewards. Friends, sometimes it’s worth taking that leap into the unknown. You never know what you might discover about yourself. 🌟🎬🎥
